TDLC Partner Programs: 11th CITYNET Japan Forum

Human Security & Disaster Management

Friday, 20th March, 2009, 14:00 – 16:20 (JST)

The TDLC has started to work collaboratively with partners to capture local activities/events and upload them to our website to aid dissemination of experts’ knowledge and experience to Japan, the Asia Pacific region, and beyond. Through this kind of collaborative effort, we expect to provide a wider range of people with access to valuable lectures and other related materials to assist them in their activities.

imageThis page highlights the 11th CITYNET Japan Forum.  CITYNET is the regional network of local authorities for the management of human settlements whose secretariat is located in Yokohama, Japan.  CITYNET currently has more than 116 members from more than 20 countries, mostly in the Asia-Pacific region.

imageActivities on the reduction and resilience of disasters have been a core emphasis by CITYNET, particularly since various catastrophes have tragically harmed many cities in the region. Following these catastrophes in 2005, CITYNET founded the DISASTER CLUSTER in which the objective moves beyond the capacity of immediate responses by also focusing on long-term sustainability in disaster risk reduction; CITYNET has sought to maintain long-term goals by building effective responses for improved resiliency against catastrophe in the Asia and the Pacific region. CITYNET desires that cities be safe and secure where the risks to natural and or man-made disasters are considerably high and getting higher due to the great population increases of urban residents.

imageThe 11th CITYNET Japan Forum was organised to address the important issue of human security and disaster management. The Forum highlighted the strategies and approaches of Mumbai City which has faced several disasters. Mr. Rajendra Vale from the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) was invited to share what Mumbai has learned from such disasters. Dr. Rajib Shaw from Kyoto University whose expertise is on disaster management spoke about Japan’s experience on managing the disaster risks and its transferability. Please watch two videos below for each lecture at the time of the FORUM.
