"What’s going on now in East Asia is something quite new – a renaissance."
"The old Asia relied on the famous flying geese analogy that saw mature industries move to low-wage countries. The new Asia is more innovative and networked – it’s characterized by a very competitive business environment that encourages new products and processes and a labor force able to absorb new ideas."
---Dr. Homi Kharas, Lead Author
A new World Bank publication "An East Asian Renaissance: Ideas for Growth" will be launched at a seminar on June 12, 2007 with its lead authors Dr. Homi Kharas, former Bank Chief Economist for East Asia & Pacific, and Dr. Indermit Gill, Economic Adviser.
This is the first comprehensive analysis of the new forces and challenges at play in the region since the Bank's seminal report of 1993, "The East Asian Miracle".
According to the report, East Asia has successfully undergone two waves of integration -- first with global markets and then within the region itself -- and must now move to a third integration at the domestic level. As even smaller East Asian countries reap the benefits of economies of scale, actions are required to ease the strains of rapid economic growth, with the need to build vibrant cities, cohesive societies and clean governments at the top of the agenda.
The authors will tour Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Manila, Hanoi and Beijing to discuss the report prior to their stop in Tokyo.
Mr. Yoshio Okubo, Executive Vice President, Japan Foundation, and Professor Hisanobu Shishido,Director, Asian Public Policy Program, School of International and Public Policy, Hitotsubashi University will also be present at the seminar as commentators. The authors will give a presentation of their findings with ample time for questions and answers.
Registration required. Admission free.
