An art workshop linking Cambodian AIDS orphans with Japanese and Cambodian artists by video connection is coming up in November 2009.

The event is a collaboration of Tokyo Wonder Site, Cambodian NGO TASK, and TDLC. 15 orphans, who have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS, will be participating in the event in Phnom Penh. These children are not placed in orphanages but instead, according to TASK principles, live within the Phnom Penh community and are supported by the NGO and the “Big Brothers” it sends to look out for them.

Leading the workshops from Japan will be animation artist Chikara Matsumoto and artist Daisuke Nagaoka, who created this workshop from scratch. Also providing guidance to the children in Cambodia will be local artists Peou Sam-an and Phe Sophon, who spent time in Tokyo this past summer to take part in a Tokyo Wonder Site program.

The Cambodian children will first draw color ink pictures of their favorite topics and landscapes. At the first two videoconference sessions, these pictures will be pasted onto dioramas and presented from the World Bank office in Cambodia.

At the third workshop, being held solely in Tokyo, images of the children’s work captured during the earlier videoconferences will be made into flip books. On completion, they will be sent to Cambodia as presents for the children.

A lecture is also scheduled for this third session by Harumi Torii, KIDS EARTH FUND Founder and Representative Director.

Take part and share—“hanbun hanbun,” or “pakondal”—meaning “fifty-fifty”—the joy of artistic creation, with the orphans in Cambodia.

We look forward to your participation.
