Thematic Workshop: Feasible and Affordable Seismic Constructions in Developing Countries

Research Institutes in 5 Countries Connect to Share Information and Discuss Future Plans

Research institutes in 5 countries connected via the GDLN on July 18, 2007 to take part in the “Thematic International Workshop 2007 on Feasible and Affordable Seismic Constructions in Developing Countries”.

Part of an ongoing research and development project entitled “Collaborative Research and Development Project for Disaster Mitigation on Network of Research Institutes in Earthquake Prone Areas in Asia”,
4 Japanese institutions—the Building Research Institute (BRI), National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED), Mie University and the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS)—organized the session to share information and discuss future plans with their counterparts in Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan and Turkey.

Of the three research topics covered by the collaborative project, this workshop focused on “Feasible and Affordable Seismic Constructions” and the three action programs within its scope: “Research with Full Scale Shaking Table Experiments on Feasible and Affordable Seismic Constructions”, “Bridge between Engineering and Construction Works”, and “Development of Simple and Affordable Seismic Isolation”.

The session was webcast in real time, allowing experts in Bhutan and other countries to follow discussions and contribute comments and questions through a chat room.
