CityNet Hosts Asian Cities Workshop Via GDLN and JICA-Net
Cities from 14 countries share knowledge and experiences on top-priority urban issues
A half-day videoconference was held today on sustainable solid waste management in Asian cities. The seminar was organized by CityNet and conducted via the Global Development Learning Network and JICA-Net. The seminar connected the Kuala Lumpur Regional Training Center in Malaysia, Asian Institute of Management facilities in Makati, Philippines, and the Tokyo Development Learning Center.
The seminar is part of Kuala Lumpur Regional Training Center Course IV which runs from December 12 to 19 in Kuala Lumpur. The KLRTC was established in 2003 as a CIFAL (International Training Centre for Local Authorities) Collaborative Training Center focusing on urban environmental management. The center assists practitioners, particularly local governments, in their continued professional development. The center is hosted by the City of Kuala Lumpur and supported by CityNet, UNITAR, UNDP, Veolia Environnement, the World Bank Institute, and the Basel Convention Research Centre, China.
In this seminar, participants from cities in 14 Asian countries were able to share experiences and knowledge with one another on the subject of solid waste management, one of the biggest environmental issues faced by cities in developing countries. Participants discussed approaches and experiences with integrated waste management including the selection of suitable techniques, technologies, and management programs to achieve specific management objectives and goals.
Representatives from Yokohama City and Tokyo Metropolitan Government provided details of their citiesÕ approaches to integrated waste management, and the seminar examined methods that take into account financial constraints, scarcity of land, the impact of programs on health and the environment, the use of appropriate technology, and the conservation of resources through 3R - reduce, reuse, and recycle - programs.
