E-Learning and Globalization — Current Issues and Future Possibilities

Hosei University Research Institute Co-Hosts International Symposium with TDLC

An international symposium titled "E-Learning and Globalization — Current Issues and Future Possibilities" was held on March 18, 2006, co-sponsored by Hosei University Research Institute, the Japan e-Learning Association and the TDLC. About 70 participants from academia and the private sector with backgrounds in education and technology joined discussions at the TDLC, with Hosei's Research Institute in California participating via videoconference.

Japan e-Learning Association President Dr.Shintaro Ishijima, from Tokyo Metropolitan University Faculty of System Design, opened the symposium with a keynote speech on current issues in e-learning and its prospects for the future. The second keynote speaker, President Yasutaka Shimizu of Japan's National Institute of Multimedia Education discussed e-learning and globalization, followed by presentations from Professor Kazuo Yana of Hosei University and Professor Nobuyuki Ogawa of Gifu National College of Technology. Mr.Ivan Ho, Researcher at Hosei Research Institute joined the session via videoconference to share his experience.

TDLC Manager Ryu Fukui also spoke about the GDLN and the great variety of activities facilitated through the network, expressing support for e-learning advancement.

Hosei University has been active in promoting e-learning, currently pursuing a government funded project with goals of establishing a new system where students can choose a course and have it delivered through distance learning methods. In addition, the University also hopes to develop contents to support a vibrant educational curriculum to facilitate on-demand study. The project was chosen by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for funding to further reform within educational institutions to enable them to meet selected social policy goals.
