Making Adobe Houses Earthquake Resistant
Building Research Institute of Japan Discusses Technology Issues with Peru
The International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (IISEE), part of Japan's Building Research Institute (BRI), conducted a videoconference on technology for seismic resistant housing connecting Japan and Peru on February 24, 2006. The conference was the first such occasion after the Institute installed videoconferencing facilities in consultation with the TDLC.
Having worked with developing countries to provide training in seismology and earthquake engineering as well as technological cooperation for disaster reduction, the BRI organized the videoconference as part of an effort to develop technology to reinforce adobe houses in Peru to make them more earthquake resistant. Mr.Tatsuo Narafu from the BRI, currently on mission in Peru, gave a presentation on his findings using photographs and diagrams. Local experts joined the session to discuss details and areas of cooperation for research.
The BRI found that videoconferencing facilitated better communication, allowing real-time question and answer sessions with experts in developing countries. The Institute hopes to continue to incorporate it in their technical cooperation projects.
