TDLC Hosts Book Launch for Two Titles on East Asian Economics
The Tokyo Development Learning Center served as the launch pad today for two new publications on East Asian economics.
"Global Production Networking and Technological Change in East Asia" and "Global Change and East Asian Policy Initiatives," co-publications of The World Bank and Oxford University Press, were launched at a seminar attended by Shahid Yusuf, the chief editor, and five contributing authors.
The panel was moderated by François J. Bourguignon, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of The World Bank. Senior economists and policy makers from five other countries in the region - Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, South Korea, and Singapore - participated via the TDLC's dedicated videoconferencing facilities and Global Development Learning Network centers in each country. Simultaneous interpretation into Japanese was available to the local audience over the TDLC's wireless headphone system.
The World Bank's Yukio Yoshimura, Vice President and Special Representative, Japan, opened the proceedings by welcoming the local audience of more than 60 people and introducing the panelists. Facilitators in each of the participating countries then introduced the economic experts who were taking part remotely.
The panel began with a paper from Mr. Bourguignon on the dynamics of East Asian growth. Eisuke Sakakibara of Keio University then spoke on financial integration in East Asia. John Ravenhill of Australian National University delivered a presentation on trade integration in the region, and Gregory Noble of Tokyo University spoke on production networking. Shahid Yusuf, World Bank Economic Advisor, talked about technology development in the region. Dwight Perkins of Harvard University discussed corporate governance, and Martin Kenney of the University of California, Davis, spoke on venture capital in East Asia.
After the presentations, the panelists took questions from the local and international audiences. Ryu Fukui, the TDLC's Partnership and Programs Manager, delivered closing remarks.
