UNAFEI: Revitalization of Volunteer Probation Aides Program for the Philippines

The United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI) used the TDLC to complete a three-day conference jointly organized with JICA-Net and PADECO on the strengthening of the volunteer probation aides program in the Philippines.
The seminar connected the TDLC with JICA's Philippines office where about 50 parole and probation officers from the Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao regions of the Philippines had gathered with Parole and Probation Administration Administrator Ismael Herradura.

Attending on the Tokyo side was Mr. Kunihiko Sakai, Director of UNAFEI, along with Deputy Director Ms. Tomoko Akane and UNAFEI Professors Mr. Masato Uchida, Mr. Kei Someda, and Ms. Tamaki Yokochi. The UNAFEI faculty heard papers from the Philippines participants representing outcomes form the first two days of the seminar. They then offered feedback on the papers and reviewed the integration of these suggestions in the second half of the day's conference.
The seminar concluded with an awards ceremony. In addition to certificates being presented locally in the Philippines by Mr. Herradura, Mr. Sakai and UNAFEI faculty 'presented' certificates in Tokyo to participants at the remote site --- a new use for the TDLC's studio and wonderful example of the variety of uses to which the GDLN can be put.
