“Orphan Meets Artist” 2nd Cambodia/Japan Workshop

The 2nd video conference of the workshop entitled “Hanbun Hanbun/Pakondal” Cambodian HIV/AIDS Orphans Meet Japanese Artists”, was held on November 15, connecting the Tokyo Development Learning Center and the World Bank Cambodia Phnom Penh office

Participating in the event in Cambodia were 16 HIV/AIDS orphans aged 12 and 13, who live in their own community in Phnom Penh and are supported by an NGO called TASK.

Continuing from the 1st workshop , animation artist Chikara Matsumoto gave a demonstration to the children on how to explain their pictures.

Before the children made their presentation from Cambodia, the artist gave a demonstration.Praying in front of his favourite shrine.

He drew a picture of scenery remembered from his childhood and pasted it on the surface of the diorama set. Then he climbed into the cut out in the set and explained his scene with gestures.

Next, the children made their presentation.

In the previous session, children had drawn colorful pictures of their houses, pond and rice field, lotus, and Christmas tree and snowman.

Learning from Matsumoto’s demonstration, they pasted their pictures on the diorama set and went in the cut out of the set and presented with big gestures.

From the filmed video, a few shots were cut off to be used for creating the ‘parapara manga-cho’- ‘cut off animation’ flip book. The filmed pictures were put together in a time-lapse sequence and participants in both Japan and Cambodia enjoyed watching the video together, sharing the joy in “Hanbun Hanbun”,playful Japanese expression meaning “fifty-fifty”.
